Hair loss is a common side effect of Adriamycin. For many patients, hair loss is a fearful symptom in chemotherapy, and many patients are reluctant to undergo chemotherapy. The authors conducted a study on prevention of hair loss with vitamin E 1,600 IU/d in patients treated with doxorubicin. Of the 16 patients who could be evaluated, only 5 had hair loss. Others only had mild or moderate hair loss. No hat or wig is required. The author’s experience is that the timing of vitamin E administration prior to the first application of doxorubicin is associated with hair loss occurring later. In 5 patients with hair loss, 3 patients were given vitamin E within 72 hours before the first use of doxorubicin. Most patients who take vitamin E for a long time do not have hair loss. Therefore, the author believes that it is best to give vitamin E for 5 to 7 days before the start of chemotherapy.
