Indonesia used two extra large forest fires in May and October last year, burning 5.1 million hectares of forest and burning smoke in western Indonesia, Singapore and parts of Malaysia for several weeks. In view of the heavy lessons from both fires, the Ministry of Forestry of Indonesia has put in place a new regulation on the protection of forests and came into effect on April 1 this year. The new regulation states that in the future when afforestation is carried out, it is forbidden to use fire to clean up the deforested land, and companies are required to break up the waste materials from the deforested land into chips in order to make pulp.
