首届芥川奖获得者、日本当代著名现实主义作家石川达三(1905—1985),一生著有《风中芦苇》、《人墙》、《破碎的山河》、《金环蚀》等40余部长篇小说。1937年秋末,中日战争爆发后三个月,他作为《中央公论》特派记者到华中战场采访。从上海出发,经过苏州、无锡、常熟,直达南京,随军参加了日军进攻南京及攻陷南京后的全过程。回国以后,他用12天时间完成了长篇报告文学《活着的士兵》,发表于《中央公论》1938年3月号。由于作品深刻揭露了侵华日军残酷屠杀我国无辜人民的血腥暴行及日军士兵的厌战情绪,杂志当即被查禁,石川本人被判处禁锢四个月,缓刑三年。当时,几乎所有的日本从军作家无不歌颂皇军“堂堂进军、赫赫战果”。唯独石川达三敢于大胆揭露日军暴行。《活着的士兵》堪称中日战争初期日本作家写的唯一的反战作品。以下是文化艺术出版社中译本《活着的士兵》的片断。

At that time, almost all Japanese military writers all praised the imperial army “dignified march, illustrious victory.” Only Ishikawa Tatsuo boldly expose the Japanese atrocities. “Living Soldiers” is the only anti-war work written by Japanese writers in the early days of the Sino-Japanese War.
