We always celebrated Dad’s November birthday on Thanksgiving Day, even after he entered a nursing home. As years went on, these events took on a double meaning for me — a traditional birthday party for Dad, and a personal thanking for all he had been to me in my life.
When we knew that it might be his last birthday, the whole family decided to prepare for a huge Grandpa Simon birthday celebration at the nursing home. It was a crowded party with lots of noise and food.
During a quiet moment, I announced that it was now Dad’s turn to listen to some stories for a change. I wanted everyone to tell Grandpa Simon what we loved about him. The room became still, and even Dad was quiet as his family crowded around him. One after another, people told stories from their hearts, while Dad listened with wet, flashing blue eyes. People recalled all kinds of lost memories — stories about when they were little, stories about when Dad was young, stories that are shared family treasures. The stories flowed. Each one seemed to trigger the memory of two more. Even the littlest grandchildren couldn’t wait to tell Dad why they loved him. For a man who had been kind to so many hundreds of people in his life, here was our chance to celebrate him.
A few months later, at Dad’s memorial service, we more fully realized what we had given Dad that night. Those were the stories people normally tell at a burial service, after a loved one is no longer around to hear the words. They are told, then, full of tears, with the hope that the person who passed away will somehow hear the outpouring of love. But we had given those loving memories to Dad in life, told through laughter, with hugs and joy. He had them to hold and roll over in his mind during his last months and days.
51. Why did they organize a special birthday party for Dad?
A. Because he enjoyed crowded and noisy parties most.
B. Because he was badly ill, perhaps unable to live long.
C. Because they would like to share the loving memories.
D. Because they were eager to show how they loved him.
52. While listening to their stories, Dad was ________.
A. moved B. angry C. worried D. surprised
53. The underlined word “trigger” in Paragraph 3 probably means ________.
A. destroy B. lose C. result from D. bring back
54. We can learn from the text that _______.
A. words are sometimes very useful
B. we need to express thanks secretly to the ones we love
C. to celebrate others’ birthdays is the way to give back love
D. each parent’s birthday party should be specially designed

Dear editor,
I read with interest the article on American families. In general I agree with it, but there are some important things it left out. It didn’t tell the reader much about the life of a househusband. It’s not an easy life. I know, because I’m now a househusband myself. A househusband has to change many of his ideas and his ways.
First of all, he has to change the way he thinks about time. Before I was a househusband, I worked full-time for the New York Times. I was a reporter, and time was always important. Everyone was always in a hurry.
However, it’s different at home. The househusband cannot be in a hurry all the time. If you rush around, you will make everyone unhappy because they don’t understand. For them, time is not important. So you have to learn to slow down. That is the first and most important rule for a househusband.
What’s more, there is something else the househusband must learn. You must learn to show how you feel about things. Many men do not know how to talk about their anger, worries, or love. But children need to know how much you love them. If you are angry, they need to know why. So does your wife. If you do not say anything, your family may get the wrong idea. Then there may be serious problems.
People talk a lot about househusbands these days. Usually they talk about men doing the housework, the cooking, cleaning, and shopping. But in my opinion, these are the easiest things to learn. It is much harder for me to change the way I think and the way I act with my family. I think other men will also find this harder, but, like me, will find it necessary if they want to have a happy family!

A sign showing a no kissing area is pictured at Warrington Bank Quay train station in Warrington.
Passengers have been told: if you want to get up to that kind of business, do it in the car park.
The sign has gone up at the drop-off point at Warrington Bank Quay station in the town of Warrington, between Liverpool and Manchester in northwest England.
A similar sign, this time permitting kissing, has been put up elsewhere in an area where kissing is considered bearable.
“We have not forbidden kissing in the station,” said a spokesman for operators Virgin Rail.
“But we have put the sign up at the drop-off point because it is not a very big area and it often gets busy with lots of traffic.”
“The sign is a light-hearted way of getting people to move on quickly.”
“If people wish to spend a little more time with their loved ones before they leave, then they should park in the short-stay car park nearby.”
However, one station is trying to rescue love from the tracks.
High Wycombe, northwest of London, is having none of it and is actively encouraging passengers to enjoy it.
“Kissing is welcome here! ... we would never dream of banning kissing,” says a poster of a cartoon couple embracing(拥抱), circled by a pink heart.
“Railway stations are romantic places,” insisted Kirsteen Robertson from Chiltern Railways.
“They are where fond farewells(告别) take place, where relationships start with a glance and even, in the case of our Marylebone station last November, where one passenger will suggest to another over the public address system.”
“So our passengers are more than welcome to share a kiss in our stations.”

Coffee is one of the world’s most widely-enjoyed drinks. Now, a new research suggests that if you drink enough coffee, it might help you avoid certain kinds of cancer.
Dr. Mia Hashibe of the University of Utah School of Medicine was interested in the connection between coffee drinking and certain cancers of the head and neck. Researchers have looked into this before, but without reaching any firm conclusions. She said, “So this finding from our new study was quite a surprise. We didn’t really have any expectation of which direction it could go into.”
To sort out the confusion, Hashibe and her assistants used statistical (统计学) techniques to, in effect, make one big study out of the earlier smaller studies. She explained, “Thanks to the earlier studies, we have a lot more power than earlier studies that looked at this. And we included 4,000 cancer patients who have cancer of the mouth and throat. And then 9,000 controls, people who do not have cancer. ”
Those studies — in Europe and the United States — found that people who drank a lot of coffee were less likely to develop cancers of the mouth and throat. “We saw a protective effect for drinking more than 4 cups of coffee per day,” Hashibe said. “This was the 40 percent decrease in risk. We did not see the same effect for drinking three cups or less per day.”
Mia Hashibe said there was a weak connection between cancer risk and drinking coffee without caffeine. And she and her assistants found no proof that drinking tea provided the same protection as drinking coffee. Their research is published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.
Hashibe says it is not clear how coffee might protect drinkers from certain cancers. “There are a few chemicals that are known to be antioxidants (抗氧化物) in coffee. So we are thinking perhaps they are playing some sort of protective role against several cancers.”
67. Dr Hashibe expected nothing of her research because ________.
A. it was impossible to get the desired result
B. the research was much surprising in fact
C. no conclusions had been reached before
D. the research team lacked faith in success
68. Which of the following might have something to do with protection against mouth cancer?
A. Coffee without chemicals.
B. Coffee without caffeine.
C. Four cups of tea a day.
D. Antioxidants in coffee.
69. What do we know about Dr. Mia Hashibe and her research?
A. She knew for sure how coffee may affect drinkers.
B. She included 4,000 people without cancer in study.
C. She found an effect for three cups of coffee a day.
D. She based her research on several earlier studies.
70. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Drinking Coffee May Protect Some Cancers
B. Drinking Coffee May Prevent Some Cancers
C. Drinking Coffee May Cure Some Cancers
D. Drinking Coffee May Cause Some Cancers

33. A。 查理是第一个在车上,所以那个男孩说:“I’m sure he took it.”,故选A。
34. C。 Charlie did it!”
当查理不承认此事时,那个女孩说,“I’m sure he does!”
这是... when... 句型。
46. B。 前面说了“A dozen year later... ”,据此推断,用middle表示“近乎中年人”最佳。
47. B。从上下文意思考虑。前面已说12年后才见面,所以开始人的面相会不熟悉,故选B。
48. C。从语境考虑。“我”认出是Charlie,所以选C。
49. D。从上下文意思考虑。12年前发生过一件令人不愉快的事,现在查理拥抱“我”,所以“我”当然感到吃惊。
50. A。 故选A。

One possible version:
Dear David,
I am glad to have received your e-mail. Now I’d like to tell you something about the new Tangshan. I’ve learned that since the beginning of 2008, Tangshan municipal / city government has done a lot to change the situation of Nanhu Park.
In the past, it was dirty and deserted because people thought little of the environment protection. A large amount of rubbish was buried there and the water was polluted. Worse still, ruins after the earthquake were piled up.
However, nowadays, thanks to the city’s special project aiming to change Nanhu Park, so much has changed. It has become an amusement park, with green hills, plenty of trees and flowers on the hills and along the paths of the park. Besides, a clear lake has formed, on the bank of which people can relax and have a great time.

50. A。 故选A。

Looking forward to your early reply.
Best wishes. Yours,
Li Hua
