On July 10, MasterCard worked with several vendors to create an experimental Internet-based Secure Electronic Transaction (SET) Credit Card System that uses smart cards and ECC (Elliptic Curve Cryptography). Although only the RSA data security encryption algorithm is supported in the current version 1.0 SET protocol. But MasterCard has promised to include an elliptic curve encryption algorithm in a new version of the SET that deals with online credit card transactions, a joint venture between MasterCard and Visa.
