High-gradient magnetic separation tests were performed on the tailings of the Witwaterstrand gold mine in South Africa. The tailings usually contains 100 ppm of uranium and less than 1 ppm of gold. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of high-gradient magnetic separation in the enrichment of these minerals. At Soutya University in South Africa, superconducting solenoids were used to recover uranium and gold from the tailings at magnetic field strengths of up to 8 Tesla. Researchers at International R & D Co Ltd, using traditional electromagnets, repeated and supplemented the work at a low magnetic field of 1.7 Tesla. Gold and uranium content increased by 3-7 times. Some important discoveries have also been made in the research work.
