In 1964, the Director of the U.S. Department of Health released a report on “Smoking and Health” drafted by the Administrator’s Advisory Board. The report states that “the health risks of smoking already have the importance of taking appropriate remedial measures.” Subsequently, reports of a similar nature further complicate the issue of tobacco production and use. Many will continue to smoke, and as long as there is a market, farmers will continue to smoke. Therefore, it is necessary to eliminate or reduce any potential hazards of cigarette smoke. The USDA Agricultural Research Agency and many academic and independent research institutes have undertaken a variety of research efforts to achieve this goal, including tobacco genetics, physiology, biochemistry, and bioassay methods for flue gases.
