烤烟打顶后,上部烟叶明显增大变厚,于物质含量增加,含水量减少。打顶后的上部烟叶与未打顶的上部烟叶有一定差异,在生产中由于烟农对此缺乏了解,所以烤坏烟的现象较为普遍。上部烟叶的耐熟性较好,要严格掌握采收时烟叶的成熟度。一般要求在烟叶达到完熟时进行采收,以防止青烟的产生。烘烤时适当延长变黄后期的烘烤时间,使烟叶充分变黄,减慢定色前期和中期的升温速度。为防止烘烤时挂灰,定色期排潮要及时,升温要稳,决不可降温掉度。几个时期的具体烘烤方法如下;
