Researchers report that the use of heat to help deliver cancer chemotherapeutic drugs to cancer centers could become the newest weapon in cancer treatment. The treatment is to combine heat with an existing cancer treatment to incorporate the therapeutic drug into the fat globules (called liposomes). In breast cancer women’s trials, the results have exceeded the researchers’ expectations; and the second phase of the treatment seems likely to be better. Researchers believe that the use of liposomes to release chemotherapeutic drugs is a way to minimize the amount of chemotherapy that can damage healthy organs. Because tumor blood vessels tend to leak, the liposomes can enter the cancerous tissue without affecting the tissue (such as the hair follicles), so the patient usually does not lose hair.
