先秦时,“洟”表示鼻液,“涕”表示目液。发展到中古,由于目液义换用“泪”来表示,因此,人们便用声近义通的“涕”来代替“洟”,西汉后期出现并随即完成了这一更替现象。偏正结构“鼻涕”最早出现于西汉后期,发展到明代,表示鼻液义则主要使用复音词“鼻涕”,只在特殊语境中才用单音词“涕”,这一格局一直保持到现在。
