可持续发展(Sustainable Developlment)是指既满足当代人们的需求又不损害未来世代人们满足其需求之发展。它是上个世纪八十年代人类为拯救自己而提出的一种新的理念和策略。就教育而言,可持续发展是指通过提高学生个体的人文素养和科技水平,以确保其与周围世界的和谐相处和自身的顺利发展。它由发展指向、发展能力和承载生命可持续发展的身心素养三个要素组成。三者有机结合相辅相成,互为渗透, 促使生命内部各种要素的动态平衡,从而有效突破当前学校教育周期的局限而维持一生富有活力和生气的蓬勃发展。这是一种立足今天,面向未来的理想的教育理念。
