郁郁葱葱的秧禾,随风飘香的稻花,沉甸甸的稻谷,让一位老人魂萦梦绕了一生。他视水稻若生命,为我国水稻生产发展殚精竭力,作出了巨大贡献。他,就是我国著名水稻专家、四川农业大学水稻研究所所长周开达教授。周开达教授长期至力于水稻遗传育种研究,在杂交水稻研究上取得了突出成就。在70年代,水稻界开始了杂交水稻研究热。但育成的不育系均由远缘杂交而成,水稻品种过几年就会退化,必须换代。敢想敢干的周开达用西非马里的一批种质资源采用籼亚种内品种间杂交的技术。在此之前,菲律宾国际水稻研究所曾作过十多年的研究,几经周折而以失败告终。国内水稻界对此也有人持怀疑和否定态度,一些专家指出:“籼亚种内品种间杂交的道路,只有失败的记录,没有成功的先例。”面对压力,周开达知难而上。他和他的同事们一道,经过一系列的测交和回交后,终于在70年代后期育成了稳定的冈.D型系列不育系,实现了杂交稻三系育种的第一次创新。
