July 29, 2006, the world’s largest retailer Wal-Mart announced its withdrawal from Germany. In its exit statement, Wal-Mart’s president had to admit that Wal-Mart was unable to meet its own goals in Germany and underestimated the difficulties it encountered in the German market and the strength of its rivals. In Germany, the biggest threat to Wal-Mart is not the Metro, Germany’s largest retailer that owns Real, Metro and other large supermarkets and Kaufhoul department stores, but the old family-owned business founded in 1913, the small budget supermarket chain Ady. Adi’s success led its founder Carl Alchechet to Forbes Rich List, with assets of about 23 billion U.S. dollars.
