Examining the changes in the history of the gold rush in Australia provides an excellent perspective for the academic community to understand the overall evolution of Australian historical theory after the Second World War. The history of the gold rush was first integrated into the construction of Australian national identity as a collective historical memory and then further promoted as a model of the grand narrative or modern historiography of the modern nation-state in Australia. Since the 1970s, it has gradually become an important target for the Australian historians to reflect on and criticize the dark side of historical development. Nowadays it is increasingly becoming the representative topic of the pluralistic narrative in Australian historical studies. The changes of Australian gold rush history research fully reflect the demand of the times for the shaping of Australian historical research.
