中国汽车运动开展较晚,一九九六年捷达轿车代表国产轿车参加的珠海汽车拉力赛,九七是中国汽车第一次参加按世界标准组织的汽车拉力赛。但中国汽车厂家对汽车运动蕴涵的商业价值还是有高度认识的。因为汽车赛无疑是检验汽车质量和性能的最客观工具之一,自然,中国刚刚起步的赛车运动,也就成了九七检验车王的舞台。最客观最有说服力的由中国汽车运动协会于去年举行的‘九七赊店老酒杯北京汽车拉力赛’,与‘首届汽联杯全国优秀车手南北挑战赛’是大家公认的九七中国汽车比武擂台。两次比赛,参赛车几乎囊括了所有国产轿车类型如:捷达、富康、桑塔纳、
