在现代美国文学史上,西奥多·德莱塞(1871—1945)是与海明威、福克纳齐名的美国三大现代小说家之一,在创作中,他坚持城市底层叙事特色,被誉为20世纪美国城市小说的开拓者。他的小说,第一,采取了直面生活的文学态度,回归生活本相描写,反映人的生存状态的本色的真实;第二,在作品人物题材的选择、处理及表现方式上,聚焦于城市普通市民,刻画“小写人”的生活;第三,放弃了作家充当“劝诫者”的传统负担,悬置创作主体的价值判断,在包容的叙事中确定小说自身的存在价值,从而使自己的作品在读者的共鸣中生存。
In the history of modern American literature, Theodore Dreiser (1871-1945) was one of the three modern American novelists who belonged to Ernest Hemingway and Faulkner.
