7.1 Introduction Solid lubricant films have been used in important parts of satellites, rockets and aircraft. For example, the space shuttle’s main engine is controlled by a gimbal mechanism to boost the direction of the boost. The gimbal bearing is lubricated with a molybdenum disulfide-based solid lubricant film. In the recently introduced jet engine, the solid lubricant film was also used for lubrication of the impeller blades and the impeller assembly. Figure 7.1 is a photograph of the wing of the impeller.
