The pyro-apatite deposits are becoming increasingly important in some countries, especially in some countries where undiscovered or only sedimentary phosphate is not commercially exploitable. The world’s total production of phosphate rocks and concentrates was about 125 million tons in 1978, of which more than 19 million tons were apatite beds (Table 1), accounting for more than 15% of the world total. Although its production was lower than in 1977 (at that time, the amount of pyrophosphorite produced was 18% of world production), it increased by 11 million tons over the past decade. This is mainly due to the expansion of the Khibiny mine in the Kola Peninsula in the Soviet Union. Currently mining
