Objective: To understand the effect of long-term hypoxic exposure on sperm function parameters in adult men. Methods: Twenty-eight healthy adult male youths residing at an elevation of 5 300 m 1-3 were selected as the plateau group and 31 adult men aged 1 300 m as the control group. Routine semen samples were collected and real-time kinetic parameters of sperm function were analyzed using computer-assisted semen analysis (CASA) system. Results: The plateau group sperm density was significantly lower than the control group (P <0.05), sperm motility was lower than the control group but no significant difference. There was a significant decrease (P <0.01) in the sperm motions of VCL, VSL, VAP and LIN in plateau group. CONCLUSION: Long-term high altitude hypoxia has a negative impact on sperm function in adult males.
