Objective To investigate the relationship between the changes of some trace elements in the serum of multiple sclerosis (MS) and Parkinson’s disease (PD) under high altitude environment and its incidence. Methods The levels of Zn, Cu, Fe, Mn and Al in 19 cases of MS and 22 cases of PD were measured by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. Results Serum Mn and Al levels in MS patients were significantly higher than those in normal controls, while Cu contents were lower. Zn and Fe did not change significantly. The content of Al in PD group was significantly increased (P <0.01), and Mn level also increased (P <0.05). Conclusion The author combined with the literature review of the preliminary analysis and discussion of this result and that the changes of trace elements may be related to the pathogenesis of these two diseases have a certain relationship.
