This essay deals with the business practices of Chinese businessmen in Central and Southern Vietnam before communists took control of Saigon, the first decade of 1975. Background Before the Communists’ victory in April 1975, 20 years after the war in South Vietnam, Saigon developed into a fertile metropolis with a population of over 3 million from an urban center less than 1 million. At the same time, peasants and landowners who fled to the relatively safe urban areas from war-torn villages have tripled the town’s population in the Mekong Delta and central South Vietnam. Within years, South Vietnam has transformed itself from a society dominated by an agricultural population (90% of its population lives in rural areas) to a refugee
