In this paper, we propose a maximum likelihood soft decision decoding algorithm for ternary linear block codes. This algorithm effectively applies the branch-and-bound technique to examine all the column patterns instead of just checking the error patterns for a code word. Finally, a computer simulation of (40,36,3) ternary linear Hamming code is given.
