Most people can hardly imagine what kind of pain orphans (孤儿) feel while growing up— being abandoned (抛弃), disliked, and laughed at. For these reasons, many orphans build a defensive (防御的) place in their hearts. In this place, they can behave as they please. Will Hunting, the main character in the US film Good Will Hunting, is a good example.
The story is simple. Hunting is an orphan who works as a janitor (清洁工) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the US. Professor Gerald Lambeau, a math professor, discovers that Hunting is a math genius and wants him to make better use of his talent. However, Hunting gets into a fight and is arrested (逮捕) after he attacks a police officer. But Lambeau doesn t give up. He sends Hunting to see a wise therapist (治療师), Dr Sean Maguire, to see if he can help the troubled young man. After a period of stony silence, Hunting opens up to the therapist and talks about his problems.
But Hunting s treatment takes a long time. In my opinion, the key to its success is hidden in Maguire s words, “It is not your fault.” He repeats the words while staring at Hunting, making it clear that he no longer has any place to hide. They are words that all orphans should hear.
Orphans often feel that no one loves them, and in order to avoid harm, they refuse people s kindness. I feel sorry for Hunting, as his past has led him to rebellion (反叛) and self-doubt. I am sympathetic (赞同的) toward Maguire, who has a kind heart.
It is normal to love our own kids, but much harder to love those of other people. I suggest that we pay more attention to orphans, not out of sympathy, but out of love.
  1. He repeats the words while staring at Hunting, making it clear that he no longer has any place to hide.
He hurt himself while playing basketball.
  2. I am sympathetic toward Maguire, who has a kind heart.
  点拨:who has a kind heart是定语从句,修饰先行词Maguire。
Many westerners who come to China cook much less than in their own countries. 3. I suggest that we pay more attention to orphans, not out of sympathy, but out of love.
We suggested that he (should) go and make an apology to his teacher.
Her pale face suggested that she was ill.
