According to Science Daily, scientists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory have developed an airborne infrared ignition detection system that accurately locates fire points of less than 0.05 square meters from 3000 meters in a matter of seconds . The detection system consists of a reflector mounted on the first rotating drum in front of the airplane to focus the infrared radiation emitted by the ground onto a pair of sensors. One sensor collects topographic information and the other sensor collects thermal information. As the rotating drum rotates, each mirror extends from perpendicular to the flight path of the aircraft to the next narrow length
