As a mixed-race minority writer, Gerard Vizno presents the living conditions and identity demands of contemporary Indians with a unique perspective and keen insight. Viznno’s first novel, Bear Heart, absorbed the image of pranksters in Indian oral literature. On the one hand, he emphasized certain traits of traditional pranksters such as wanderers, saviors, reality changers On the other hand, it combines the tribal culture with the background of modern society and gives distinctive values and characteristics of the times. This writing strategy reflects Vizno’s serious thinking about the living conditions of contemporary Indians. To some extent, he points out a way that can be drawn on for the survival of American minorities in modern society.
