艺术造型中的线,也称之为线条、线形或形式线,是造型艺术的构成因素之一。根雕是造型艺术,理所当然的要对线条加以研究和运用。线条,在客观世界里是无迹可寻、却又无处不在的。所谓线条,是指物象的色彩明暗、高低错落、转弯抹角等交合之处的运动迹象,以及物象的边缘界限,也就是物象在空间的位置和轮廓。线条,是人们捕捉客观事物形象的一种抽象功夫,是人的主观意识体验和理解客观事物形象的一种精致的概括。这种抽象和概括,积淀着人的观念和情感内容,体现出一种简化原则和直观特征,它既为视觉所把握,又与心理相适应,使之成为造型艺术中的构成因素和审美对象。运用线条观察客观物象是人类的天性,也是人类的共性。在儿童的朦胧意识里,就不自觉地在地面、墙面运用线条画形;无论在东方或西方,人类对艺术的追求,都是从线条开始的。而且从一开始,就与形式、甚至和形象结合起来。远古的洞穴壁画或者高山崖画,东西方的祖先都不约而同地采用线
