In the past year immunologists have reached the long-sought goal of proving T cell recognition antigen receptor molecules. Understanding the structure of this receptor is essential to understanding how T cells perform their immune function. The function of T cells includes the identification of foreign killer cells and the control of other immune cell activities including antibody producing B cells. It is now known that T cell receptors are made up of two distinct protein chains that are structurally similar to the antibody protein. In addition, two research groups reported that they cloned the receptor genes a few months ago. One gene was cloned from mouse cells.
