Objective To study the health effects of long-term low-dose ionizing radiation on the lens of radiation workers. Methods A total of 474 hospital radiologists and 157 controls in Linyi City were investigated by questionnaire and slit lamp examination of ophthalmic lens opacity. The results of the survey were statistically analyzed. Results There was an increased risk of ocular lens opacity in radiation workers engaged in radiation diagnosis, radiation therapy, nuclear medicine, and interventional radiology, with odds ratios of 1.16 (95% CI = 0.62, 2.15), 1.62 (95% CI = 0.76, 3.45), 1.96 (95% CI = 0.78, 4.95), 2.12 (95% CI = 0.91, 4.95). Conclusion Exposure to long-term, low-dose ionizing radiation may lead to an increased risk of ophthalmic opacification in radiation workers and should be strengthened to protect the eyes of radiation workers.
