This paper deals with the conditions for criticality and other related problems for the stationary state of the adiabatic continuous-flow stirred tank reactor(CSTR).A new technique for analysing the thermally sensitive region in the operation condition of adiabatic CSTR is discussed, and mathematical expressions for two im- portant thermally sensitive boundaries, ignition and extinction, are given.A new concept, transition phenome- non or the disappearance of criticality,is studied theoretically, and expressions of the conditions of this trans- ition to ooccur are given. Finally, the present paper discusses time-to-ignition for marginally supercritical systems which are very close to the thermally sensitive boundary of ignition.
