The master’s dissertation is a complete report submitted to the instructor by a student who, after completion of higher education, has been specially trained to fully understand the direction of a particular subject and has a certain level of research skills. It is a testimony of a student’s scientific ability and level of performance through a specific problem in his field of study. In the process of writing a dissertation, graduate students need to consult a large amount of domestic and foreign literature. The subsequent references are secondary sources of information that cannot be ignored. However, through the comparative analysis of three English master thesis of Hebei University in 2007 and three articles of English master thesis of Hebei Polytechnic University in 2007, we have found many common problems in the number of references, generation and literature types. It is hoped that the academic level and literature needs of our postgraduate students can be seen in order to give rise to reflections on the normative nature of the references of scientific research and dissertations.
