Buildings are not just walls and rooftops (屋顶). According to Ieoh Ming Pei, buildings carry on and show our culture.
For the past half-century, the Chinese-American has borrowed from many cultures in his designs.Pei designed the Suzhou Museum. It has white walls and a dark rooftop This makes it look like a classic Chinese garden. Another one of his works-the Museum of Islamic Art in Qatar (卡塔尔)-shows Arabian culture. It has traditional Arabian arch windows “Lasting architecture has to have roots (根),”Pei once said.
Do you know?Architecture also has life. It can influence (影响) people’s behavior (行为) in some ways. For example, green architecture is popular these days. Every floor has lots of open space, and every open space is full of trees-the buildings look like vertical forests This design helps people relax and encourages them to go outside instead of staying inside all day long.
Buildings can truly influence us in a bigger way than we might think. After all, many of them have stood for hundreds of years.
Wright might be the most important architect of the 20th century. Many people followed his designs and used his ideas. He thought all parts of a building should look like they belong together. He also thought buildings should be in harmony with (与……和谐) nature. One of his most famous works is called Falling Water It was built over a waterfall in a forest.
Zaha Hadid,UK
Few women succeed (成功) in becoming a world-famous architect. But Hadid did.Hadid was born into an Iraqi family in Baghdad and later moved to London. Many of her works make people think of UFOs,like the Galaxy SOHO in Beijing and the Beijing New Airport Terminal.
Antoni Gaudi, Spain
If one architect could be called the spokesman of a city, it might be Gaudi. All of his works are in Barcelona, Spain. Seven of them are UN World Cultural Heritage sites (联合国世界文化遗产).Gaudi’s works are ornate (华丽的) and full of imagination. The La Sagrada Familia (圣家族教堂) looks like a bunch of trees reaching up to the sky.
