The famous Italian theorist and novelist Umberto Echo has constructed a reader-centered theoretical system of interpretation of open works. The theoretical core consists mainly of three parts: text, reader and methodology. They refer to creative, pluralistic and ambiguous modern open works; virtual “model readers” with profound knowledge and aesthetics; and critical strategies with a combination of libraries and encyclopedias. This theoretical system shows Echo’s sincere attitude towards open and modern works of art. He teaches us the way to confront the maze of literature and gives a theoretical enlightenment to the analysis of repetitive classics and narrative structure.
