以牛設喻,是佛經中常見的一種象徵手法,除有專門的《佛說放牛經》《佛說群牛譬經》外,許多重要的佛教經典都以牛做過精彩的譬喻,但各經用“牛”所指代的本體往往不盡相同。例如,《妙法蓮華經·譬喻品》曰:“有大白牛,肥壯多力,形體姝好,以駕寶車。”是以大白牛喻大乘。《勝鬘經》曰:“如牛王,形色無比,勝一切牛。”是以牛王喻佛和菩薩。《佛遺教經》曰:“譬如牧牛之人,執杖視之,不令縱逸犯人苗稼。”是以牛喻心。儘管印度佛經中“牛”的意象和内涵異常豐富,但始終没有形成一種與之相關聯的
