The design parameters of underground fiberglass reinforced plastic sewer pipes were studied with the help of large computer program. Design studies include the structural parameters of the pipe wall, the nature of the soil surrounding the underground pipe, and the interaction between the adjacent soil and the flexible pipe. The NCP division of Owens Corning produces underground sewers using a continuous process of making large diameter pipes; this versatile, continuous process produces large diameter pipes with diameters ranging from 24 to 138 inches. This continuous production process is achieved by a continuously moving steel mandrel. In order to verify the stability of the large-caliber FRP pipes for underground applications, creep tests have been carried out on pipes since May 1972; such studies will be carried out for the long term. The effects of various loads on exposure to underwater tubes are also under study.
