中国美学对于象的思维方式并非一以贯之。象在不同的时代被赋予了不同的审美内涵,因而也表现出不尽相同的审美形态。从整个中国美学史来看,中国美学的象思维有其逻辑的发展与演变过程。这不但是哲学与文化的历史进展的结果,而且也符合其自身内在发展的需要。简言之,汉代以前,象思维的敞开方式主要是以物象为主。汉代至魏晋时期,象思维的表现形态主要是以情象为主。唐代以后,随着道禅思想的深入影响,象思维一方面逐渐被内化,衍生了意象理论;另一方面又要被超越,在意象的基础上发展出意境理论。这样,物象、情象、意象、意境中象思维的逻辑演变构成了中国美学的独特风格。
