INTRODUCTION Since the early 1980s, Allegheny Ludlum Company has been keen to study the production of stainless steel strip using single-roll casting. It has been considered to replace the hot-rolled strip with a cast strip, and as with the hot-rolled strip, the strip needs to be Cold-rolled and annealed to achieve the surface quality and mechanical properties of the conventional process strip. The reason Allegheny Ludlum is keen on this new technology is that there are many benefits to casting strips close to the finished thickness, including: labor, energy, investment, and lower production costs.
