The current policy goal for mental health services is to provide comprehensive local-based services, including hospitalized health care and out-of-hospital health care in local communities. The Frien/Claybury study found that the cost of health care in the community group was less than the cost of the hospital group: Douglas House research shows that the cost of the hotel ward group is lower than that of the regional general hospital psychiatry, and the benefits are even greater. The Maundsley Daily Life Program study suggests that the cost of community health care for people with chronic mental illnesses is less than hospital-based health care costs, and the benefits are greater. For mild mentally ill patients, the cost may be more.
