从“留美幼童”到“五四”运动这是由一张清同治年间摄于上海的照片,所唤起的发生于100多年前的故事。这故事长期湮没,鲜为人知。当这张照片从记忆的大海深处浮出水面,背后的故事虽已模糊残缺,扑入眼帘的一切却依旧鲜活:那些怯生生的眼睛,那些倔强而紧抿的嘴唇,还有那优雅地握在手里的折扇……他们有一个共同的名字,叫“留美幼童”。他们的故事像一件珍贵瓷器的千百碎片,散落在中国和美国,他们的故事奇异而曲折,美丽而忧伤。作为中国最早的官派留学生,他们是大文豪马克·吐温的朋友;他们曾受到南北战争的英雄——美国总统格兰特将军的接见;他们曾亲眼目睹了一个神话般的时代:看见贝尔发明电话机,看见留声机在爱迪生的手中出现;他们是哈佛大学、耶鲁大学、哥伦比亚大学、麻省理工学院等美国著名学府的学生;他们曾亲身经历近代中国的风云变幻:他们中有清华大学最早的校长;有中国铁路、电报、矿山的开山鼻祖;有李鸿章的幕僚;有袁世凯的顾问;他们中出现了中华民国的第一位总理……
