上阳子曰:“求财求侣炼金丹;财不难分兮合侣却难,得侣得财多外炉,做仙何必到深山”?(详见《东方修道文库·金丹集成》176页)这是说人们何必一定到深山中去修炼。“仙”在丹书中有“鬼仙、神仙、人仙、地仙、水仙、天仙、剑仙、金仙、至仙”等仙人名称。而“道”只有一。诸路仙家从丹书中考证,犹似今日人们谈的不同练功层次。道在丹书申不属仙类,但是,它是从修仙的路程走过来的。修仙是炼道的前半路程,天仙修毕后才是“炼道”中的途程。
