自从民国时期“大足石刻考察团”团长杨家骆、佛学家王恩洋等对大足宝顶石窟进行过系统考察后.其为唐末五代时期密宗支派柳本尊信仰道场的观点便得到学术界一致公认。作为一种信仰,密宗自唐代开元年间形成后,在传播中便依赖各种咒术,而这些咒术的相当一部分带有自残的性质。唐末五代文士孙光宪在《北梦琐言》中记载:“释教五部持念中,有大轮咒术,以之救病,亦不甚效……陵州贵平县牛鞞村民有周达者,贩鬻此术,一旦沸油煎其阴,以充供养,观者如堵,或惊或笑。初自忘痛,寻以致殂也。”(黄阳兴《中晚唐时期四川地区的密教信仰》,
