Recently, protease β subunits have been found only in mouse and human thymus epithelial cells. This subunit, designated β5t, is a characteristic component of thymus that plays a role in positive thymic selection. In order to investigate whether β5t protease can be used as a marker for the differential diagnosis of thymic epithelial tumors, we used immuno-histochemistry to analyze 54 cases of thymic epithelial tumors, including 41 cases of thymoma and 13 cases of thymic carcinoma. The expression of β5 subunit protease was detected in thymoma neoplastic epithelial cells; in all subtypes of thymoma, protease β5t was expressed in most of the B thymoma (positive in 21 cases), while in type A Thymoma not
