This is a first. To stop illegal logging in Indonesia, an American engineer came up with a clever idea of using a smartphone to monitor the sawing of trees. In the hinterland of the Suyayan forest reserve in the Soluk district of western Sumatra, Asifuli Ardimento has easily climbed a 15-meter tall tree. He fixed a pair of small solar panels on the tree trunk and a cell phone in the middle. Under the tree, Christopher White closely watched the progress of the work. After everything seemed arranged, he sent a text message to the phone placed at the top of the tree and immediately received a reply. “Success! ” Exclaimed Christopher White excitedly.
