买罗高粱或“白日”与南非高粱之间的正反交中。F_1植株是能育的。但是包括有买罗高粱或“白日”做为母本的杂交F_2群体中,出现一些不完全雄性不育性。用南非高梁与买罗高梁×南非高梁的F_1植株及F_2植株回交一次,则雄性不育的植株的比率增加很多。第二次回交获得99%以上的雄性不育性。当买罗高粱或买罗高粱——“白日”F_2用做为对同一雄性不育系的父本时,就完全可以恢复其能育性。试验结果指出。雄性不育性是由于买罗高粱细胞质和南非高粱核因子之间的相互作用而产生的。这种类型的雄性不育性,可能为生产杂交种高粱种子,比单独依靠核基因的三系杂交方法,提供了更满意的方法。亲本原种可能更容易培育和保持,并且一个杂种仅需要两个隔离区组,而不需要有三个隔离区组。
