A new trend in catalyst development is to convert carbon dioxide (CO 2) to fuels and chemicals. Some of the processes under development are the production of dimethyl ether (DME) or olefins from methanol derived from CO 2. Until recently, CO2 sequestration was still considered as the main route to reduce CO 2 emissions, but more efficient ways of catalytically converting CO 2 to fuels and chemicals are now being sought. For example, Novomer, a company engaged in materials science, is developing a process that combines CO 2 into polymers and fine chemicals. DSM Ventures has been involved with Novomer in January 2008.
