“Go straight and you will see a forest,”
A stranger told me when I went to the east.
“In it there was a fierce creature,
Underground you could find some buried treasure.”
The creature made me feel a little scared,
But treasure was the only thing for which I really cared.
I thanked the man and he said, “My pleasure.”
And then I started my adventure.
I reached the forest in the dead of night,
And took out my torch which was the only light.
It was so quiet all around,
Not even a single sound.
Suddenly, a monster jumped out,
“Another tasty child!” I heard him shout.
“A large number of people came here for money,
But in a minute they were in my tummy!”
The monster had a gigantic mouth,
Which was as big as a house.
“But, to give you a chance, here’s a riddle,
Solve it then I’ll guide you to the forest’s middle.”
The treasure was probably lying there in peace,
So I said: “OK, give me your riddle please.”
“Then, listen carefully, my dear!”
Said the monster with a sneer.
“If you can’t answer it, you’d better run!
Or you may not see tomorrow’s sun.
If you have two sheep and I give you a cow,
How many animals do you have now?”
Two plus one is ... “Three!”I cried,
At that moment I was so satisfied.
The monster looked shocked, “I’ve never, ever
Met a human who’s so clever!”
“... I just can’t believe what I heard,
But, I’ll live up to my word.
Close your eyes. Count to three.”
I did it, and then shouted with glee:
I found myself standing under a tree,
And there was a little spade right in front of me.
I took the spade, dug and dug,
For a few minutes I could see only bugs and mud.
Finally, I touched something hard,
I bowed and found a box and a card.
In the dark I couldn’t see what it said,
So I turned on the torch and slowly read:
“Congratulations, my friend! You’ve found where I’m lying ...”
The words below were kind of chilling:
“I’m the famous millionaire, Mr. Hugh,
And I’d love to share my shiny plushy lovely pretty GRAVE with you!”
“Finding Treasure” is a poetry written by Wu Sijia, a hard-working student of Grade 3, junior. Is she telling a fairy tale? Is something meaningful at the back of her mind supposed to offer to the readers? Both are or neither is. She shows great interest in English, especially in writing poetry. It’s her interest that makes her do much reading and writing. She’s learned a lot and has got her own success. She got the first prize in the last English competition. Now let’s go back to the poetry. Don’t you think the words are very beautiful? Don’t you think the sentences are very fluent to read through? Don’t you think she’s a clever girl with much thought? Don’t you enjoy reading the poetry written by the girl who is the same age as you? If your answer is “Yes”, keep doing so like her. You will one day find the treasure in learning English.
