Magnesium ions are necessary to maintain intact cardiac function and structure. Experimental magnesium deficiency causes myocardial necrosis and increases the sensitivity to cardiac toxicants. In these cases, giving magnesium can play a protective role. Recent studies have shown that the loss of cellular magnesium may be the basic biochemical response to myocardial damage caused by different causes. Other studies show that magnesium deficiency affects coronary blood flow, coagulation and atherosclerosis.
