In the early Republican model of film narration, there were many hidden atypical narrations of disobedience and anomalies, one of which was Shanghai’s film tradition. This article starts with Xie Jin’s “Women’s Basketball 5” to discuss the atypical narrative in the early Republican films. This atypical narrative transcends purely political connotations and at the level of cinema aesthetics reflects the power game between different narrative modes in the cinema world. This is helpful for us to analyze the origin of the art of the new Chinese film, the differentiation of the cinema art after the founding of the People’s Republic and the establishment of aesthetics of socialist cinema.
