Anyone who has read Maugham’s literary works will be impressed by his profound insight into human nature and his cold and elegant satire. Maugham’s despair of sin, the hypocrisy of the clergy, his deliberate satire on Christian doctrine runs through almost every piece of his work, and vividly expresses his anti-Christian tendencies, as he repeatedly claims himself as not Knowable. Through the analysis of several of his most representative texts, this article explores the extremely contradictory religious view of Maugham. The salvation concept in his works is the best expression of Christianity. Dependence on religion, the negation of religion, eventually resorted to Oriental mystery
