The U.S. Air Force (USAF) and Pratt & Whitney plan to conduct a key design review of the F119 engine earlier this summer to finalize the changes to eliminate high-pressure turbine section vibrations. Vibration problems that cause high stresses on the F119 high-pressure turbine blades have occurred only on engines built on the Engineering and Manufacturing Development (EMD) structure. The early F119 configuration included a prototype of the YF-22 and YF-23 fighter demonstrators during the flight evaluation, with no EMD high-pressure turbine installed. However, Pratt & Whitney said the prototype turbine and EMD turbine structure is exactly the same, but EMD design time in order to improve efficiency and productivity made some slight changes.
