在列奥·施特劳斯那里,古典自然正当的出场经历了两个阶段,其一是以反思自然为对象的哲学的出场阶段,其二是以反思人类社会中的永恒之物为对象的政治哲学的阶段。古典自然正当论的出现是第二阶段的产物。施特劳斯所理解的自然正当可概括为是一种相对于习俗而言的恒定的、初始性的存在,它是一种隐藏于现象背后的、有赖于哲学家的努力去发现和挖掘的内在规律和逻辑,自然正当是人类社会的终极价值判准、是人类社会前进的理想图景。
